50 Years of the Human Rights Covenants”

Speech by Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the event

Human rights are being trampled upon.  Not everywhere, but much too often and in far too many places in this world. It seems almost ironic that we have come here today to celebrate human rights. We are marking the 50th anniversary of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the United Nations’ central human rights covenants.”  October 6 2016 © Federal Foreign Office

Statement by Foreign Minister Dr. Steinmeier prior to the planned demonstrations in Cologne:

“Like freedom of expression, the freedom to demonstrate is a valuable and important asset in all democracies that is available to everyone and must be upheld.

However, it must be clear that it is totally unacceptable to bring domestic conflicts from Turkey here to us in Germany and for anyone to intimidate people who have different political convictions. There is no room for this in Germany, and nor will we permit it.  I know that the vast majority of people of Turkish descent living here in Germany see this in exactly the same way.”  Berlin July 30, 2016 © Press release Federal Foreign Office
